It is quite simple:

1) Russian export of oil and gas to China is going down - never to come up again. The explanation is simple: China has no money - and Russia accepts neither gold nor Chinese monopoly-money - They want CASH in EUR or USD. China has no EUR, so Russia has to launder the USD through the banking system - which is not cheap.

2) After Gazprom had not filled their storages in Europe - Gazprom must hand over their possesions in Europe and the revenue will be used to pay back the russian loans in European banks - and they are extensive. Here the main problem is the price Gazprom will get as compensation for getting out of Europe - that price will be considerably lower than the debt to European banks. Soooo.... Lavrov and Putin will say that those are private companies. Both the USA and EU will say: WE DON'T CARE - DO AS YOU ARE TOLD!

3) Russia knows very well, that the moment they withdraw their forces and support to the separatists in Ukraine and their support of Lukasjenko in Belarus - those territories will be lost (together with Krim) - forever. Lavrov and Putin will say: But Donbas and Krim are Russian territories. Nato, EU and USA simply say: NOPE!

4) If Russia loses Donbas and Krim: The next step is the Finns want the Karelian Istmus (that was conquered in WW2) back - in working order - thank You very much. Furthermore Königsberg is to be given back to Germany after being annexed in WW2 - but that leaves the question about what has to be given back to Lithuania of Belarus (and Poland).

5) Putin and Lavrov sees this as the thin end of the wedge demolishing Russia forever - which is a very likely possibility and Ukraine is just the first step in the dissolution of what Russia sees as their Russia proper. No mentioning of the ethnic cleansing that have taken place. To the EU and Nato: Get back up in the Christmas trees - monkeys!
